1874 Double Eagle, Brilliant MS62
Rarely Seen This Fine

1874 $20 MS62 PCGS. Struck in the year following the Panic of 1873, the 1874 double eagle's status as the backbone of U.S. coinage was reaffirmed by the Act of January 22, 1874, which deemed it legal tender in all payments. Still, double eagles did not circulate domestically to any great extent. They remained a stalwart of banking transactions and foreign trade.

The 1874 Philadelphia issue is typical of many Type Two twenties -- moderately available in About Uncirculated or lesser grades, but scarce in even low Uncirculated condition. The issue is very rare in Select Mint State or finer grade levels. This lustrous and frosted MS62 example displays a sharp strike and rich, sun-gold color, with numerous small marks and light field chatter that are mostly confined to the obverse. Population: 42 in 62, 8 finer (11/17).
