Description

Radiant 1874 Double Eagle, MS62

1874 $20 MS62 PCGS. Garrett and Guth (2006) offer a simple yet effective summary of this issue: "The 1874 double eagle is truly scarce above MS61." This Type Two issue, which displays IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse but abbreviates the denomination as TWENTY D., has a sizable mintage but a comparatively small pool of Mint State survivors.
This attractive MS62 example displays flashy luster on both sides and frosty obverse devices. The strike is crisp, and the light, scattered abrasions that account for the grade are only minimally distracting. The obverse surfaces have a yellow-orange appearance, while the reverse's color is closer to lemon-gold. All factors considered, a delightful representative of this conditionally challenging issue. Population: 14 in 62, 6 finer (7/07).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26AN, PCGS# 8970, Greysheet# 9812)
