Description

1874 Double Eagle, MS64
Significant Condition Rarity
One of the Three Finest-Known Examples

1874 $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1874 double eagle shows a moderate 366,780 pieces struck for circulation, one of the Philadelphia Mint double eagle mintages trending downward that would culminate in the remarkably low productions of the 1880s. Most 1874 twenties circulated to some degree -- the average certified survivor grades AU55 to AU58, and the vast majority of Mint State coins cluster around the MS60-MS61 level. An MS62 example is considered a conditional rarity, and anything finer is rare. PCGS reports only a half dozen pieces in MS63, and this MS64 example is tied for the finest at PCGS with two other coins, a fact that has not changed in the past 10 years.

Potent mint luster radiates from both sides of this near-Gem example. The strike is sharp throughout the Choice original surfaces, displaying pleasing apricot-gold color over most of the obverse, with a splash of brassy-gold throughout the central areas. Similar coloration decorates the reverse. A handful of small marks on Liberty's cheek and neck are grade-consistent. To our knowledge, no MS64 example of this issue has changed hands at auction since its last appearance in our 2015 ANA Signature sale, which brought $39,950 as lot 4479. Interested bidders will no doubt realize that the opportunity to obtain an example such as this is fleeting -- it may be many years to come before a comparable coin comes along. Population (PCGS and NGC combined): 3 in 64, all at PCGS, 0 finer (1/25).
