Description

1874-CC Double Eagle, MS61
Scarce at This Grade, Seldom Seen Any Finer

1874-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Winter 2-A. At least five die marriages exist for the 1874-CC, most featuring widely spaced Cs in the mintmark as seen on the present example. Slight differences in the date position identify the Winter 2-A variety, confirmed by a small die chip adjacent to Liberty's hair behind the eye. Overall, the 1874-CC double eagle is one of the more accessible issues of the Nevada Mint's double eagle series, although in Mint State it remains a challenging condition rarity. This MS61 coin displays lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces with relatively few marks on Liberty's portrait. The richly lustrous surfaces show only minor softness at the upper hair strands and at Liberty's face curls. Some reflectivity remains on the otherwise frosty surfaces for bold eye appeal. PCGS Population: 20 in 61, 4 finer (6/25).(Registry values: N4719)
