Description
1875-CC Double Eagle, MS62
Terrifically Toned Type Two Twenty
1875-CC $20 MS62 PCGS. Winter 1-A. Yellow-gold surfaces are
illuminated around the devices with lighter white-gold. Some deeper
spots exist on the cheek and more deeply on the reverse, but there
are no other abrasions that are individually distracting. Strike is
somewhat soft on the hair details. This is the most common of the Carson City With Motto double eagles (1866-1876), but had the third highest mintage of 111,151 coins, bested by both the 1874-CC (115,085) and 1876-CC (138,441). Examples become scarce in MS62 and rare above that level, with resubmissions ballooning the certified populations to many times their true number.
Winter lists 16 die marriages for this year, which inexplicably comprise of ten obverses and only four reverses. Moreover, Reverse D was only used once and Reverse C was utilized twice, leaving the other two reverse dies to mint 13 die marriages.(Registry values: N4719)
