Description

1875-S Liberty Double Eagle, MS63+
Only Three Finer Coins at NGC

1875-S $20 MS63+ NGC. The 1875-S Liberty double eagle claims a substantial mintage of 1.2 million pieces, but the issue is surprisingly elusive in high grade. Most of the large mintage was released into circulation near the time of issue and used to settle large accounts in both foreign and domestic trade. The coins that remained in this country circulated widely in the hard-money economy of the American West, suffering much wear and attrition over the years. The coins sent to foreign destinations were subject to rough storage and transport and repeated counting over the years, acquiring extensive bagmarks and other imperfections along the way. The 1875-S is rare in MS63 condition, and very rare any finer.

The present coin is a Plus-graded Select specimen, with lightly marked orange-gold surfaces that retain all of their original mint luster. The design elements are sharply detailed in most areas, but just a touch of flatness is apparent on some of the stars. Overall eye appeal is terrific. Census: 14 in 63 (3 in 63+), 3 finer (3/18).(Registry values: N4719)
