Description

1875-S Liberty Double Eagle, MS63
Among the Finest Known

1875-S $20 MS63 PCGS. Exceedingly lustrous and frosty surfaces set this gleaming, Select Uncirculated double eagle apart from all others. The coin displays captivating overtones of copper-red, lime-green, and olive-gold over richly flowing, orange-gold luster. Only scattered, minor abrasions touch the satin-smooth surfaces. An area of alloy toning on the reverse above the eagle's head as well as a small accent by star 5 on the obverse add interest to the lush toning characteristics.

The 1875-S issue belies its 1.2 million-piece mintage with the availability of Uncirculated examples abruptly ending at the MS62 level. Most collections (including many of the finest) lack a Select example of this date. Just seven pieces are certified numerically finer by both services combined. Population: 10 in 63, 5 finer (3/14).(Registry values: N4719)
