Description

1875-S Twenty Dollar, MS64
Swirling Mint Frost
One Finer Coin at PCGS

1875-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Block S. The 1875-S has one of the highest mintages among Type Two double eagles (1.2 million coins), and it is correspondingly available through MS62. From there, its population begins to diminish rapidly with fewer than three dozen Select examples at PCGS and NGC combined. There are nine near-Gems at PCGS plus two at NGC, and each service has graded a single coin finer (11/18).

This crisp sun-gold double eagle enjoys swirling mint frost and notably strong definition for the type. Faint lavender-rose accents occur on each side, furthering the appeal. Marks and grazes are minimal. We note a small area of planchet roughness, as made, right of the date.(Registry values: N7079)
