Description

1875-S Double Eagle, MS64+
Condition Census Rarity

1875-S $20 MS64+ PCGS. Mint State examples of the 1875-S double eagle are available in abundance, but the vast majority of these pieces grade no finer than MS62. This San Francisco issue is rare in MS63, and just a handful of coins are known in MS64 and finer condition. Since our Auction Archives began in 1993, we have handled a coin graded MS64 on only four previous occasions, and we have never seen a higher-grade piece. This Plus-designated example is the single highest-grade 1875-S double eagle that we have ever handled. Frosty, shimmering yellow-gold luster adorns bold devices and remarkably unabraded surfaces. Close scrutiny with a loupe is required to discern a few faint hairlines that kept this coin from a grade possibly two points finer -- the eye appeal is that strong. An incredible example, second to only one higher-grade coin at PCGS. Population: 7 in 64 (2 in 64+), 1 finer (2/20).
