Description

Pleasing 1876-S Double Eagle, MS64

1876-S $20 MS64 NGC. CAC. The 1876-S double eagle, with a mintage of nearly 1.6 million pieces, is easily located in grades Extremely Fine to MS62. The NGC/PCGS certified population declines significantly at the MS63 level of preservation and again in MS64 and MS65. Neither service has seen specimens finer than Gem.
The lustrous surfaces of this pleasing Choice Mint State specimen reveal hints of greenish-tan and the design elements exhibit relatively good detail. A few minute obverse bagmarks preclude finer status; nevertheless, the coin possesses pleasing overall eye appeal for the numerical grade. Census: 10 in 64, 2 finer (9/09).(Registry values: N7079)
