Description

1876-S Twenty Dollar, MS64
One of the Finest Examples Known

1876-S $20 MS64 NGC. The large mintage of 1.6 million pieces, the San Francisco mintmark, the Type Two classification, and the Centennial date have all contributed to this issue's immense popularity, and it is a double eagle that is widely available, as Garrett and Guth say, "in grades of Very Fine to MS-61." It appears that many pieces were jostled about and/or shipped overseas and later repatriated, as at the near-Gem level of the present coin, the issue is decidedly uncommon. This specimen is one of 10 so graded at NGC, with two coins finer (8/10). Similar populations are seen at PCGS. This MS64 specimen is a specially attractive example, with excellent luster and medium orange-yellow coloration on well-struck surfaces that are free of distracting abrasions.(Registry values: N7079)
