Description

1876-S Double Eagle
Conditionally Rare MS64

1876-S $20 MS64 NGC. The 1876-S twenty dollar, coming from a mintage approaching 1.6 million pieces, a large number of which were stored in foreign banks, is plentiful in circulated and lower Mint State grades. The population drops precipitously in near-Gem, in which 24 pieces have been certified by NGC and PCGS, and a scant three specimens finer.

The lustrous orange-gold surfaces of this MS64 example are imbued with hints of soft rose and violet. The design elements are well-struck, except for the typical softness in Liberty's hair which does not show the hair-strand detail of the 1850 to 1859 dates. Minute marks are consistent with the grade designation. Census: 11 in 64, 2 finer (7/14).(Registry values: N7079)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26AX, PCGS# 8978, Greysheet# 9925)

Weight: 33.44 grams
