Description
Choice 1876-S Double Eagle
Only One Coin in Higher Numeric Grade at PCGS
1876-S $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1876-S Liberty twenty enjoyed a
large mintage of nearly 1.6 million pieces. Examples in lower Mint
State grades are not too difficult to locate, making this date a
favorite choice of type collectors seeking an example of the Type
Two double eagle. Predictably, the population drops off
dramatically in higher grades, with Choice specimens in the
rare-very rare category, and Gems being almost unobtainable. This
attractive Choice example displays pleasing greenish-gold surfaces,
with hints of rose, and vibrant cartwheel mint luster. The design
elements are well-detailed, and only a scattering of minor contact
marks and luster grazes prevents an even higher grade. Population:
11 in 64, 1 finer (3/12).(Registry values: N7079)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26AX, PCGS# 8978, Greysheet# 9925)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
