Description

1877 Double Eagle, MS63+
Important Condition Rarity
CAC Endorsed

1877 $20 MS63+ PCGS. CAC. The 1877 Liberty design was modified in 1877 to spell out the word DOLLARS on the reverse -- a significant enough change to create what is known as the Type Three design. The 397,670-piece mintage yields many examples but most are heavily abraded and receive grades between About Uncirculated and MS61. MS62 pieces become scarce and finer coins are true condition rarities. This example is a PCGS Plus-graded MS63 coin that carries CAC endorsement for its grade level. No higher-graded pieces have to date received a CAC sticker. Partially reflective fields surround frosted motifs for excellent eye appeal. The gleaming orange-gold surfaces are needle-sharp and only minor abrasions are widely separated on the lustrous, attractive fields. PCGS reports only one numerically finer example plus one other 63+ coin. PCGS Population: 2 in 63+, 1 finer. CAC: 2 in 63, 0 finer (11/25).(Registry values: N2998)
