Description

1877 Double Eagle, MS63
Just Three Finer at PCGS

1877 $20 MS63 PCGS. Yellow-gold surfaces contain hints of green-gold. A few scattered abrasions are present, but only those above and right of the second 7 in the date, above the coronet, and right of the bun warrant mention. Cartwheel luster gleams and glistens across the surfaces, and eye appeal is simply exquisite. In 1877, the Mint changed the Liberty Head double eagle design for the second time. Liberty's head was moved slightly northwest, with a revised bust truncation line, and the denomination was spelled out on the reverse. This type is much more common than Type Two double eagles, as payment of gold coins at par resumed in 1878, greatly increasing mintages. However, the 1877 date is still difficult, especially in Mint State. PCGS has awarded just three finer certifications (3/26). PCGS Population: 26 in 63 (2 in 63+), 1 finer (3/26).(Registry values: N2998)
