Description

1877-CC Double Eagle, AU58
First Year of the Type Three Design

1877-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 3-A. The introduction of the Type Three double eagle design with a slightly modified portrait and DOLLARS added to the reverse coincided with a dramatic reduction in gold output at the Carson City Mint in 1877. Twenty dollar gold coin production declined by more than 70% over the previous year to just 42,565 pieces. Comparable near-Mint examples are very scarce, while fully Uncirculated representatives of this popular Western issue prove exceedingly rare.

Overall design detail is strong with hints of inconsequential softness on the highest points of the portrait, the eagle's neck, and the tailfeathers. Frosty, shimmering luster and greenish accents generate top-notch eye appeal. Small flecks in the fields do not detract. NGC reports 24 finer submissions (1/17).(Registry values: N1793)
