Description

1877-CC Twenty, Near-Mint
Scarce Carson City Issue

1877-CC $20 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1-B. The halcyon days of Carson City double eagle production were between 1874 and 1876, the only three years that mintages of the domination at the facility surpassed 100,000 pieces. Even locally mined ore was often sent by railroad to the San Francisco Mint, purportedly due to personality differences between Carson City businessmen and mint officials. The 1877-CC has a mintage of 42,565 pieces and is usually encountered in XF. The present piece displays original green-gold and peach patina. Luster dominates the reverse and fills the obverse stars and curls. Marks are relatively few, and noticeable only on the shield and the field near the profile. Struck from boldly clashed dies, and housed in a green label holder. Population: 47 in 58, 28 finer (12/13).(Registry values: N1793)
