1877-CC Twenty, Near-Mint State
Rare This Nice, Attractive

1877-CC $20 AU58 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Popular as the first Type Three double eagle with TWENTY DOLLARS spelled out, this Carson City issue is more widely sought than its Philadelphia and San Francisco counterparts not only for its low mintage, but also for the allure of the CC mintmark as a symbol of the Old West during the great Westward expansion.

Properly graded AU58 double eagles are few and far between, but this appealing, original twenty is a fantastic example. The deep, orange-gold hue -- seldom seen anymore on Carson City gold -- was not dipped out, but remains rich and vibrant over the once-prooflike fields. To be sure, there are abrasions, but they are much less frequent and less severe than normally seen. The reverse shows very few marks and retains nearly full-prooflike flash. A bold strike is untempered by wear. Population: 48 in 58, 29 finer (3/14).
