Description
Sharp 1877-S Double Eagle, MS63
1877-S $20 MS63 NGC. The 1877-S is the first S-mint Type Three double eagle, those featuring TWENTY DOLLARS in place of the previous TWENTY D. As with so many S-mint Type Threes, most of the survivors are found in the higher circulated grades, or the lower Mint State grades from MS60 to MS62. The certified populations thin out noticeably in MS63, where NGC and PCGS together have graded only a couple of dozen examples, with only four finer (8/09).Brilliant luster cascades off of both sides of this splendid orange-gold Select Mint State coin. A few moderate abrasions are grade-consistent, and the strike is sharply detailed throughout, if just short of full. Census: 4 in 63, 1 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26B2, PCGS# 8984, Greysheet# 9927)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
