Description

Reddish-Gold Choice AU 1878-CC Twenty Dollar

1878-CC $20 AU55 NGC. The 1878-CC double eagle is a low-mintage issue of 13,180 pieces, produced in a year when the Morgan silver dollar was the primary focus of the Nevada facility. But it is equally if not more true that the San Francisco Mint stole more and more market share away from the Comstock Lode miners as the years passed. Rusty Goe writes in The Mint on Carson Street that in 1879 the Carson City facility saw gold deposits diminish to the "point where less than $325,000 worth of gold coins could be manufactured in a year, while everyone knew that the San Francisco Mint could do that much in a day."
This Choice AU example offers dusky reddish-gold color, with most of the original field reflectivity still showing. Small abrasions pepper each side, but the only larger ones are above Liberty's head near 1 o'clock. Census: 44 in 55, 37 finer (7/10).(Registry values: N2998)
