    Description

    Conditionally Elusive 1878-S Twenty

1878-S $20 MS62 NGC. A casual glance at the mintage figure for this issue would suggest a date that is relatively common in all grades. After all, 1.7 million pieces were produced, among the highest total for a Type Three Twenty from this era. In Mint State, however, the '78-S is surprisingly rare, and there are no coins certified above the MS64 level (2/05). A high end BU representative, both the obverse and the reverse are overlaid in warm orange-gold color. The strike is sharp and free of criticism, and the luster quality is good for the grade. Scattered abrasions seem to prevent a higher rating. Population: 67 in 62, 7 finer (2/05).(#8987) (Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26B5, PCGS# 8987)
