Description

1879-CC Double Eagle, Sharp AU55
Semiprooflike Fields, Warm Color

1879-CC $20 AU55 NGC. Variety 1-A. An early die state example, with strong tailfeathers on the eagle and substantial semiprooflike mirroring in the fields. The design elements are sharply defined and exhibit little friction; only light chatter overall attests to brief circulation, and warm, straw-gold luster delivers a high degree of eye appeal.

The 1879-CC is a better date in the Carson City short set, defined by a low mintage of 10,708 coins and a high attrition rate. This issue is typically seen only in VF or XF grades, and occasionally in the lower AU range. Choice AU examples are scarce, and this date becomes genuinely rare on the plus side of the Mint State threshold. A single coin in the Smithsonian Institution grades just XF40, per Garrett and Guth. The present example is undeniably one of the more appealing representatives known.
