Description

Choice AU 1879-CC Twenty
Elusive, Low-Mintage Issue

1879-CC $20 AU55 NGC. A low mintage of 10,708 double eagles was produced at the Carson City Mint in 1879, making the issue scarce in all grades today. Doug Winter estimates the 1879-CC has a surviving population of 300-350 pieces all told, with about 80 examples in AU grades. Current population data from NGC indicates a slightly larger population, but the figures may be distorted by duplicate submissions.
The present coin is an attractive Choice AU example, with sharply detailed devices and just the slightest hints of wear. The surfaces are a rich yellow-gold color, with strong hints of rose and green. Only minor abrasions are evident and much original mint luster remains on all surfaces. Census: 52 in 55, 55 finer (7/10).(Registry values: N2998)
