Description
Sharp Choice AU 1879-CC Twenty
1879-CC $20 AU55 PCGS. This coin was struck out West in the year that Mint Director Henry R. Linderman died at age 53 and Charles E. Barber became chief engraver. The Carson City Mint struck 10,708 double eagles, a stingy total explained by the decision of the new Mint director, Horatio Burchard, and Treasury Secretary John T. Sherman to place the facility on a reduced work schedule while its fate was pondered in Washington. (We cannot resist commenting that the decision took 14 years to come to fruition.)This is a well-struck example with generous luster remaining on the mellow reddish-orange surfaces. The light abrasions are scattered and individually insignificant. Population: 19 in 55, 24 finer (2/10).(Registry values: N2998)
