Description

1879-CC Double Eagle, AU58
Elusive Western Issue
Fewer Than 400 Coins Extant

1879-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1-A. There were even fewer double eagles struck at the Carson City Mint in 1879 as compared to 1878. Both years represented substantial decreases from the middle part of the decade. The 1879-CC claims a meager mintage of 10,708 coins, of which 265 to 375 pieces are thought to survive, according to Rusty Goe. The average grade for this elusive Western issue falls between XF45 and AU50, substantially lower than the near-Mint example offered here. Design definition remains needle-sharp with barely a trace of friction on either side. Yellow-gold surfaces display plenty of remaining frosty luster.
