Description

1879-CC Double Eagle, MS61
Just One Submission Finer at NGC

1879-CC $20 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-A. This is the only variety for the issue. It is also an early die state with full tail feathers on the reverse. Later die states show the right feathers effaced from die lapping. The 1879-CC enjoys a small mintage of just 10,708 coins -- the fourth-lowest production total among all Carson City double eagles. Doug Winter also notes that the issue typically comes with fewer deep abrasions than other CC twenties. This minimally marked mint condition example corroborates that statement. Additional attributes of this immensely appealing representative include a nearly full strike, distinct prooflike reflectivity in the fields, and bright orange-gold color. Not to be forgotten is the fact that the 1879-CC is a noted condition rarity. There are only 18 Uncirculated examples reported at NGC and PCGS combined, including an unknown number of resubmissions and crossovers. NGC reports a mere five coins in MS61 with just a single example finer (3/15).(Registry values: N7079)
