Description

    1879-O Double Eagle, XF40
    Sole O-Mint Type Three Twenty

1879-O $20 XF40 NGC. In 1879 the New Orleans Mint reopened for coinage for the first time since 1861, striking silver dollars along with gold eagles and double eagles. While the Morgan dollar mintage was plentiful, the two gold coin production totals were skimpy in the extreme: 1,500 examples of the ten dollar, and 2,325 of the twenty dollar. While New Orleans would later on strike other O-mint tens, the 1879-O double eagle would become the sole Type Three O-mint twenty, making it a low-mintage, must-have rarity for series completists (or would-be completists). Most survivors of the issue are in the Very Fine-Extra Fine range, as is this XF40 NGC example. Some faint prooflikeness from the original dies still runs through the orange-gold surfaces, even though they show extensive chatter and moderate wear; a couple of singular marks appear -- one, smallish, near Liberty's ear, a trio of reeding marks behind the eye -- but far fewer than might be expected.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26B8, PCGS# 8990)
