Description

Low-Mintage 1879-O Twenty Dollar, XF40

1879-O $20 XF40 NGC. The 1879-O double eagle comes with a minuscule mintage of 2,325 pieces. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006), in their U.S. gold coin reference, contend that fewer than 150 examples are known today. NGC and PCGS combined have certified about 130 specimens in all grades.
Honey-gold patina imbued with traces of light tan covers both sides of this XF40 example, each of which display traces of luster in the recesses. Sharp definition characterizes the design features, except for wear on the highpoints. Light contact marks are evenly distributed on the surfaces, none of which are individually noteworthy.(Registry values: N4719)
