Description

Remarkable 1879-S Double Eagle, MS61

1879-S $20 MS61 PCGS. The 1879-S is another double eagle issue that was sent abroad in large quantities, and although large numbers have returned in recent decades, they are in surprisingly low grades, with the majority in Extremely Fine or About Uncirculated. This issue is relatively scarce in Mint State, and PCGS reports just 51 examples finer than the present piece (7/08). Eye-catching luster radiates beneath the pleasing yellow-gold patina that graces both sides. The surfaces have a number of grade-defining abrasions, but all are inconsequential. The strike is sharp save for minor weakness on several stars. (Registry values: N1793)
