1879-S Double Eagle, MS62
Among the Finest CAC-Approved Examples

1879-S $20 MS62 NGC. CAC. The general availability of the 1879-S double eagle in Mint State has increased since the advent of third party grading, although the vast majority of these coins grade no finer than MS61. MS62 examples are scarce, and none are finer at NGC. The finest CAC-endorsed coins are seven MS62s, one of which is offered here. Sharp design elements complement softly frosted yellow-gold luster, and grade-limiting abrasions are uniformly unimportant save for a vertical mark on Liberty's neck near the hair curls.

We have offered an MS62 coin on only 16 previous occasions, and we have not offered a finer piece since 2009, when an MS63 PCGS coin garnered $32,200 in our April Central States Signature sale. This is only the second CAC-endorsed MS62 coin that we have handled. Census: 49 in 62, 0 finer. CAC: 7 in 62, 0 finer (10/17).(Registry values: N4719)
