Description
1879-S Double Eagle, MS62
Tied for Finest at NGC
1879-S $20 MS62 NGC. This early Type Three San Francisco
double eagle issue has a mintage of more than 1.2 million pieces,
yet the date is elusive in Mint State. At the MS62 level, for
instance, it is a borderline condition rarity, and no finer
examples are known to NGC. As MS62 1879-S twenties go, this is an
attractive example, lightly abraded overall and yet strongly
lustrous with mild reflectivity to yellow-gold and pale orange
surfaces. Occasional copper spots and a light layer of patina add
to the coin's aura of authentic eye appeal. Census: 34 in 62, 0
finer (12/10).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26B9, PCGS# 8991, Greysheet# 9932)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
