Description

1879-S Double Eagle, MS62
Rare Top-Grade CAC Coin
Few Finer Certified Pieces

1879-S $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. The San Francisco Mint continued to be the chief producer of double eagles in 1879, striking more than 1.2 million coins (about 1 million pieces more than all three other mints combined). However, Uncirculated examples are seldom offered finer than MS61 and are decidedly rare finer than MS62. This MS62 coin is among the finest 1879-S double eagles endorsed by CAC, and it is rare as such. Frosty yellow-gold luster yields greenish tints and peach accents as it illuminates sharp design elements. Scattered light abrasions account for the grade but are not overly detracting. Population: 97 in 62, 9 finer. CAC: 9 in 62, 0 finer (3/18).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26B9, PCGS# 8991, Greysheet# 9932)
