Description

1879-S Twenty Dollar, MS62
Semiprooflike and Appealing
Few Finer Pieces Known

1879-S $20 MS62 PCGS Secure. A number of 1879-S double eagles were discovered in the Saddle Ridge Hoard, but the high-grade Mint State population was unaffected. This San Francisco issue remains scarce in MS62 and is decidedly rare finer. The finest pieces known are a pair of MS64 coins at PCGS. None are finer than MS62 at NGC, although a couple of coins in this grade are designated Prooflike at that service (4/18).

This PCGS coin is sharp and semiprooflike, showing remarkably clean surfaces for the grade. Only some faint lines on the cheek and in the fields (largely visible only due to the coin's reflective qualities) are all that deny a finer numeric assignment. Rich orange-gold color blankets each side, and eye appeal is far beyond expectations for the grade. Population: 94 in 62, 9 finer (4/18).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26B9, PCGS# 8991, Greysheet# 9932)
