Description

1879-S Double Eagle, MS63
Condition Census Rarity

1879-S $20 MS63 NGC. The otherwise plentiful 1879-S Liberty double eagle becomes a major condition rarity in MS63 and finer. NGC and PCGS combined list only 13 coins in MS63 and MS64. Few of these have appeared at auction, especially within the last decade. The current MS63 coin is a fresh example in our auctions and within the Condition Census. Sharp border stars complement the bold central devices, while frosty cartwheel luster yields original straw-gold and peach-yellow hues. Scattered light abrasions determine the grade but are less impactful than on the typical Mint State piece. NGC Census: 2 in 63, 0 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26B9, PCGS# 8991, Greysheet# 9932)

Weight: 33.44 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
