    Description

    1880 Liberty Twenty, MS61
    Underrated Low-Mintage Issue

1880 $20 MS61 NGC. Ex: Duquesne. Mintage of double eagles declined dramatically at the Philadelphia Mint in 1880, to a meager 51,420 pieces. The reason for this reduction in gold coinage is unclear, but it may be that the Mint had to put most of its resources into producing the 12.6 million Morgan dollars it turned out in 1880. The issue is quite elusive today, especially in high grade. In his new reference Type Three Double Eagles 1877-1907, Mike Fuljenz notes:

"I still think the 1880 double eagle is a good value and recommend any example that grades AU58 or higher."

The present coin is a rare Mint State example with sharply detailed design elements and bright greenish-gold surfaces that radiate vibrant mint luster. Both sides show a number of minor, grade-consistent contact marks and eye appeal is outstanding. Census: 28 in 61, 8 finer (5/15).
