Description

1880 Double Eagle, MS62
Low Mintage, Conditionally Rare

1880 $20 MS62 PCGS. Ex: The Gilded Age Collection. Similar in overall rarity to the 1879 P-mint double eagle but even more challenging than that scarce issue in Mint State, the 1880 twenty dollar gold is seldom seen any finer than this outstanding example. When Doug Winter acquired this piece for The Guilded Age Collection's owner, he described the coin as "one of the best I've ever seen." Today, this double eagle retains that distinction, with only about a half dozen numerically finer examples certified by PCGS and NGC combined. Remarkably few abrasions exist on the smooth and attractive orange-gold fields and Liberty's cheek is equally smooth and virtually unmarked. In terms of eye appeal, this coin ranks among the finest 1880 twenties known. Many advanced collections fail to have an 1880 in Mint State, and those that do would be hard-pressed to match the quality of this gleaming example. Population: 10 in 62, 4 finer (8/24).(Registry values: N4719)
