Description

1880-S Twenty, Apricot-Gold MS63
Sharp and Relatively Unmarked

1880-S $20 MS63 PCGS. The 1880-S double eagle is one of the many Type Three S-mint issues in the Liberty Head series that show a sharp line of demarcation between the range of pieces available in circulated grades, with a smaller number obtainable in the lower Mint State grades, MS60 to MS62 -- yet virtually nonexistent in MS63 and finer grades. In the case of the 1880-S, some 836,000 pieces were struck, yet PCGS and NGC combined have seen only 11 submissions in MS63. The Select grade is achieved here due to the relative lack of heavy abrasions that these large, soft gold coins usually exhibit. Generous luster proceeds from well-struck apricot-gold surfaces. Population: 5 in 63, 1 finer (2/13).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26BB, PCGS# 8993, Greysheet# 9933)

Weight: 33.44 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
