Description

1881 Double Eagle, AU58
Absolute and Condition Rarity

1881 $20 AU58 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint produced just 5,108 double eagles for all years from 1881 through 1887, a mintage total that includes circulation strikes and proofs. That total includes 2,260 examples of the 1881 double eagle, with 2,199 circulation strikes and 61 proofs. The top 29 certified examples of the 1881 double eagle include these: MS62 PCGS (2), MS61 Prooflike NGC (1), MS61 PCGS (2), MS61 NGC (2), MS60 PCGS (3), MS60 NGC (3), AU58 PCGS (8), and AU58 NGC (8). In all grades, NGC and PCGS have examined 78 circulation strike 1881 double eagles. Proof strikes are also rarely encountered. NGC has certified just five proofs and PCGS adds 17 others to the population charts.

Market appearances of 1881 double eagles are infrequent, and always a source of excitement for serious double eagle collectors when one becomes available. Just 56 examples of circulation-strike 1881 double eagles appear in our Permanent Auction Archives that track more than 30 years of sales data. Those appearances include 20 offerings that grade AU58 to MS62, and those 20 offerings represent no more than a dozen different coins.

This impressive near-Mint example has olive and rose-gold surfaces with trivial orange toning spots. The surfaces are moderately marked as expected for a large coin produced in a soft metal. Copper spots near the bust point and below the E in STATES, and a dark toning spot in the D of UNITED will serve to identify this specimen. This is an important opportunity for the advanced collector to add the 1881 double eagle to their cabinet.(Registry values: N4719)
