    Description

    1881 Twenty Dollar, AU Details
    Important Low-Mintage Issue

1881 $20 -- Obverse Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. The 1881 double eagle's mintage of 2,199 circulation strikes puts it even lower than the famed 1879-O eagle, which was struck to the extent of 2,325 pieces; but some other following P-mint double eagle productions, including the 1882 (571 business strikes) and the 1885 (751 coins) make the 1881 seem a bit underrated and neglected today. This piece shows attractive orange-gold color on each with scattered marks consistent with the AU Details grade. The luster is a bit thin on each side, but that detracts little from the appeal overall, or from the importance of this piece. A problem-free AU55 PCGS example sold in in FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2014), lot 5549, for $61,687.50.
From the collection of Donald E. Bently, sold for the benefit of the Bently Foundation.
