Description

1883-CC Liberty Double Eagle, MS61
Rarely Seen Finer

1883-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1-B. The 1883-CC Liberty double eagle claims a mintage of 59,962 pieces, a tiny production total in absolute terms, but not unduly small in the context of the series. The issue can be found in lower circulated grades without much difficulty, but Mint State specimens are decidedly elusive. Many examples have been repatriated from overseas holdings and a group of 20-30 relatively high-grade coins reportedly surfaced as late as 2001.

The present coin is an attractive Mint State specimen with sharply detailed design elements in most areas and just the slightest softness on some star centers. The mintmark is positioned with the second C to the left of the D in DOLLARS, identifying the rare Variety 1-B. Some diagonal die lines are evident near star 13 and in the shield. The vivid orange-gold surfaces are lightly marked for the grade and display a mix of satiny mint luster and prooflike reflectivity on both sides. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 76 in 61, 30 finer (7/18).(Registry values: N4719)
