Description

1883-CC Double Eagle, MS62
Only Light, Scattered Abrasions

1883-CC $20 MS62 PCGS. Winter 2-A. Ex: The Fairmont Collection. The yellow-gold surfaces exude substantial luster. The strike is strong, save for a few strands of hair on Liberty and feathers on the eagle's neck. The surfaces are relatively free of abrasions, unlike many examples of this heavily exported and therefore bagmarked issue, though minor scuffs are noted near Star 13 and on the field near the forehead. The 1883-CC is a formidable conditional rarity in MS63 and finer grades, making this example a desirable alternative given its paucity of scattered bagmarks.

The 1883-CC has the second highest mintage of the four Carson City issues of the 1880s at 59,962 coins, bested by the 1884-CC's mintage of 81,139, but beating out the 1882-CC at 39,140 and the 1885-CC at only 9,450. All of these issues were shipped overseas in significant quantities for international trade, leading to the availability of high AU and low Mint State coins for collectors today.(Registry values: N4719)
