    1885 Double Eagle, AU Details
    Just 751 Business Strikes

1885 $20 -- Obverse Damage -- NGC Details. AU. Thanks to a memorably low mintage of 751 business strikes, the 1885 double eagle is a highly desirable issue regardless of condition. This wheat-gold example, though only lightly worn and broadly lustrous, has numerous small to moderate marks peppering the obverse. The amount of metal movement on and near Liberty's portrait likely led NGC to the "Obverse Damage" modifier and the details grade, though that side retains considerable arm's-length eye appeal and the reverse is comparatively clean. Despite its impairment, this remains an important coin, particularly for those collectors who might otherwise find an 1885 double eagle out of reach.
