    1885-CC Double Eagle, AU53
    Underappreciated in High Grades

    1885-CC $20 AU53 NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1885-CC double eagle is an underrated Carson City issue in AU and Mint State grades. At only 9,450 pieces, it boasts the second-lowest mintage of the series, trailing only the legendary key 1870-CC, and it is scarcer in the upper grades than most other issues in the series from this mint. This AU example shows remnants of luster in the peripheral recesses, with bright yellow-gold patina overall. The strike is sharp and there is only trivial wear over the high points of the design. The heavy die lapping that often affects issues of this period is not present on this piece.
