Description

Low Mintage 1885-CC Double Eagle, AU58

1885-CC $20 AU58 NGC. In the 2001 reference Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint, Douglas Winter writes:

"Mint employees were greatly saddened by the election of Democrat Grover Cleveland as President in 1884. The new administration immediately replaced all key mint employees with Democrats and then closed the mint. A relatively small number of silver dollars and double eagles were struck before the mint was shut down on March 18, 1885."

Among the 9,450 twenties issued was the present piece, which retains most of its initial luster. Scattered marks are inevitable given its brief stint in circulation, although only the facial abrasions are consequential.(Registry values: N2998)
