Description

1885-S Liberty Twenty, MS64
Only One Finer Coin at PCGS

1885-S $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1885-S Liberty double eagle claims a substantial mintage of 683,500 pieces. Like most San Francisco Mint issues of the period, it circulated heavily at the time of issue and few examples were saved for numismatic purposes. Most examples seen are well-worn, and show extensive surface marks. Examples in MS64 condition are rare, and finer grades are virtually unobtainable.

The coin offered here is a delightful Choice example, with well-detailed design elements that show just a trace of softness on Liberty's hair. The pleasing surfaces display attractive peach-gold patina, with vibrant mint luster and few signs of contact. Overall appearance is most appealing. Population: 32 in 64, 1 finer (3/13).
