Description

1885-S Twenty, Frosty MS64
Rare This Well-Preserved

1885-S $20 MS64 PCGS. A small quantity of 1885-S double eagles was recovered from the Saddle Ridge Hoard, including a handful of Mint State pieces. But the rarity of Choice examples was largely unaffected. PCGS records 34 submissions of this date in MS64 (one in MS64+) and two Gems finer; NGC lists 11 pieces in this grade and none finer (11/15). Most of these high-end coins likely survived via overseas hoards, miraculously avoiding the heavy abrasions that were carelessly inflicted upon most other foreign trade coins. Garrett and Guth write in their Encyclopedia: "The 1885-S issue jumps rapidly in price at all levels of Mint State." Thus, certified population data should be taken with a grain of salt, as resubmissions are more frequent for this date than some others. The present example displays a bold strike with frosty luster that glows in warm honey-gold hues in the centers and deepens to green-gold around the peripheries. A lack of serious abrasions denotes the grade.(Registry values: N4719)
