Description

Shining Choice 1885-S Double Eagle

1885-S $20 MS64 PCGS. By 1886, commercial demand for double eagles on the West Coast was sated, and San Francisco struck no examples that year. The coins of the previous year, 1885, thus experienced heavier circulation than they would have otherwise, which had a direct impact on the number of Mint State survivors.
This yellow-orange near-Gem offers swirling luster on the obverse and flashy reflectivity on the reverse. Well-defined overall with a hazy appearance and a few small copper spots on each side. A handful of small, scattered abrasions preclude a finer designation. Despite this issue's availability in better circulated and even lower Mint State grades, Select examples are elusive, and near-Gems are condition rarities. NGC has graded no finer representatives, while PCGS has certified just one such coin (7/07).(Registry values: N4719)
