    1886 Double Eagle, AU Details
    Fewer Than 60 Pieces Known

1886 $20 -- Polished -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Gold coinage during the fiscal year 1886 increased to more than $34 million, over the $24.8 million struck in fiscal year 1885. By contrast, production of gold bars decreased from more than $32 million in 1885 to about $19 million in 1886. During this period, gold coinage was conducted exclusively at the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints due to the closing of Carson City in 1885. The fiscal year 1886 ended in June, but for the calendar year, gold coinage at both mints was almost exclusively focused on half eagles and eagles. The only 1886-dated double eagles struck for circulation were 1,000 Philadelphia coins. This was a dramatic departure from the San Francisco Mint's reputation for producing vast amounts of the largest gold denomination.

The 1886 double eagle is not only rare overall, it is the only option for collectors seeking to complete a date set of Type Three double eagles. PCGS estimates that only 40 to 60 coins are known in all grades, and the two leading certification services combined report only 57 grading events, not counting impaired coins. This AU-level piece is bright and reflective from polishing but nonetheless shows sharp detail. Scattered light abrasions are not distracting.
