Description

1888 Double Eagle, MS63 CAC
Conditionally Rare Any Finer

1888 $20 MS63 PCGS. CAC. The year 1888 marked a resurgence for the double eagle denomination in Philadelphia, as the date saw a six-figure mintage at that facility for the first time since 1879. That resurgence was for decidedly commercial purposes, however, leaving most survivors worn to some degree. MS60 to MS62 examples exist, but Select coins such as the present piece are conditionally rare. This sharply impressed example has a wonderful "skin" over satiny surfaces that shift from yellow-gold to orange depending on the light. Great surface quality for the grade and eye appeal in spades. The high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. Population: 32 in 63 (1 in 63+), 7 finer. CAC: 5 in 63, 0 finer (1/25).
