    Description

Impressive Choice Mint State 1888-S Double Eagle

1888-S $20 MS64 NGC. Sharply struck and highly lustrous with satiny surfaces and brilliant pinkish-gold color. Minor abrasions on each side keep this from a higher grade, which currently doesn't exist. This example is tied for the finest certified by either PCGS or NGC. Condition rarity is an important concept in the numismatic marketplace, and this example is a perfect illustration. The mintage of 859,600 coins suggests that it should be considered a common date, as indeed it is, in circulated and lower Mint State grades. PCGS and NGC have combined to grade 3,396 examples of this issue, and 3,184 of those coins grade between AU58 and MS63. The balance includes 148 examples graded below AU58 and just 64 examples graded MS64. Census: 26 in 64, 0 finer (12/05).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26BU, PCGS# 9009)

    Weight: 33.44 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
